Start with the right council
Oxford City Council is the starting point for services such as household bin collections, council tax, housing and local planning within the city. Oxfordshire County Council handles a different set of responsibilities, including highways, libraries, schools and social care.
Nearby places do not all sit within the city council boundary. If you live in Botley, Kidlington or another surrounding community, check the council responsible for your address before reporting a problem or sending an enquiry.
Find a place to join in
A community centre can be a practical first contact when you want to find a class, meet people or hire a room. Headington Community Centre publishes its own activity and hall-hire information. Ask the organiser about the particular session rather than assuming the building's opening hours cover every group.
For a new activity, check who it is for, whether a place must be booked and any access or equipment requirements. A short enquiry can save an unnecessary trip and help an organiser prepare for you.
Volunteer around the time you have
Oxford Hub brings volunteers and local organisations together, with programmes focused on inequalities in the city. Its Windale Community Hub in the Leys is one of the places where this work happens. Check the current programme and visiting arrangements before turning up.
Oxford City Farm offers another route into community activity. Its own website is the place to check opportunities and visitor arrangements. You do not have to commit to the first group you find; ask what the role involves and whether it fits your availability.
Explore close to home
Use the directory's area and service filters to look for local groups, venues and activities. Contact the organisation directly to confirm the details that matter to you.
